Why do you guys think... poker is all about bluffing?
It is not. Bluffing is only one small element of a large set of tools available to players. So many people here basically only know to bluff and trap, that's a very flawed way to play poker.

Free learning tools are all over, i's just a matter of looking. The first step is to realize that you (anybody, myself included) know very little about poker. People throw the phrase “minutes to learn, lifetime to master” around but don't truly appreciate it.
Here is a good anthology of posts to start you off. When you read it, notice how many different sections there are, each a very important concept.
Notice that Bluffing and slowplaying only have 2 links each. Notice also that the two links that say “slowplay” also have “is very rarely correct” right next to it.

when you do bluffs, do it in he later stages of the game when you have a good idea on how a player plays his hands, always watch how that player makes his move on the table. to me bluff is instilling doubt on the player which would cause him to back down. and that could be one of the reasons why it is “slowplay”, etc etc...

One other thing people have forgotten is that you want to try and keep people in the hand, without raising to high to build the pot. This builds the pot, too many people just jump in and bet high and that does nothing but get people aggravated and makes the game boring.

Eagle, I have no idea what the second sentence is about, but your first is almost word-for-word the definition of slowplaying.

I think what the second sentence means is that maniacs lure everyone to overbet and get them out of their game. The result being several players jump the pot with all ins and you end up with a table that's playing bingo with the winner of the multi-massacre often difficult to upseat due to the large chip lead they have.
Even worse, if the chip leader slow plays. The newbies like us just end up folding/going all out or the game takes longer than necessary to play strategy poker because of the chip's leaders patience in slow playing.

Lol, it's funny how several months later, I'm the one playing like a maniac. Ahh life...
Well, Unlucky of 11-12-2007, duh! That's what maniacs do. If you factor in that most tight aggressive players only go in with strong hands against a maniac then you would realize that it in fact would be the maniac playing bingo against the lower stacked skilled player.
Even worse, if the chip leader slow plays, he eventually loses momentum to the skilled players especially in a sng where he's bound to play bingo on a hand and lose badly resulting in the other player gaining the chip lead with the momentum favoring him. The only reason a slow player, assuming he's slow playing just due to the chip lead and not because he's utilizing his skills at setting up something, gets an advantage here is due to their chip lead. Once they lose that, it's almost impossible for them to regain that lead without gaining a good hand. Their opponents not going to buy into their bluff, they're going to hesitate with bluffs, everything's against them at that point except if they're really skilled and if they're really skilled, there's no reason for them to slow play that much.

poker is pretty unpredictable but like the other guy said bluff can be used well and is a great way of winning poker but alot of it comes down to experience and knowing how the player plays
